How to raise a calm and confident companion?
Persian cats tend to have issues when sudden changes occur in their daily lives. For example, when you add another cat in the household, it can stress your Persian cat. Our advice will help make the transition easier in helping your Persian cat get used to those changes while keeping its confidence and security.
Never rush. Patience and gentleness are key with your furry baby during the stage of socialization.
When should you start socializing?
- With kittens, it is generally easier, especially between the age of 12 weeks and 6 months old. They are more open to new experiences. Naturally curious, a kitten will likely embrace socialization, while maintaining their confidence for life.
- For adult Persian cats, the process might still be successful. But it does require from your part, a totally different approach. Be very patient and go at a slower pace. They will respond with time if you reassure them of your love, spend extra time with them, either by playing or brushing your Persian cats.
- Keep their daily routine the same when the new cat arrives.
- Sweaty, gently introduce them to each other. Absolutely, do not force things to be happening right away.
When you feel that both cats are calm, retry a new introduction. Pet both of them, show affection and care. Introduce cat toys to invite them to play. As us humans, we can sometimes, due to our personality, encounter shyness and difficulty getting used to a new person.
Living alone with your Persian cat? When to introduce strangers?
Safety and security are both of importance for a sweet and quiet Persian cat. Places off the ground floor, like cat hammocks or elevated Persian cat beds, will help your cat to observe from the higher ground and assess the situation.
Ask the new person coming for the very first time, not to use a heavy voice and avoid sudden moves. Both of you can sit on the cough and begin a conversation about your cat. Tell your friend your cat name and his habits. Look at your cat to let him know he is being the center of attention. If your cat gets down and comes to you, pet him with affection. Offer him some of his favorite treats. Ask your friend to gently extend his hand for your cat to smell. If your cat doesn’t get away, he may very well be ready for your friend to touch head, maybe scratch it gently. Your friend can try to offer your cat his favorite treat.
But no matter what happens or not, do not rush your cat to be friendly at the very first visit. Some cats, especially older, need more time.
How to socialize your Persian cat with other pets, like dogs?
Persian cats with their sweet nature are no big fan of a puppy or a grown dog being playful for their first encounter.
- Our advice is first to separate them, using a barrier in between 2 rooms.
- Get them acquainted with the smell of each other. Provide one another a scented blanket from the cat’s bed or the dog’s bed. Animals relate very well to smell. It’s an option to get them used to each other.
- Under supervision, allow them to be together for 2 weeks, offer playtime, cuddles and treats whenever they behave.
- With time and patience, you’ll witness both are finally acquainted and socialized.
- They may even sleep in about 1 month or 2, with each other.
CONCLUSION:
The success of any socialization for a Persian cat, with a new cat, a stranger or a dog is PATIENCE.
